Plas Gellidara is located on Lon Gellidara, a quiet lane on the outskirts of Penrhos, and close to the coastal village of Llanbedrog.
Llanbedrog, which overlooks Tremadog Bay, has a renowned mile-long sandy beach sheltered by headland. The village is home to Oriel Plas Glyn Y-Weddw Arts Centre, a village store, pharmacy, excellent primary school, 2 thriving public houses, a number of popular restaurants, a beach bar and village hall. 2 miles north lies the vibrant market town of Pwllheli with its marina, beaches, shops and supermarkets, many restaurants, schools and a leisure centre. 3 miles south is the seaside village of Abersoch and its beautiful beaches. The peaceful and picturesque Llyn Peninsula enjoys glorious scenery with watersports and three golf courses on the doorstep.
History
The original 15th-century house having been built with 1 metre 4ft thick stone walls. The Small, unglazed, sliced ‘arrow’ window still exists. There was a heavy main front door. A fireplace with chimney lead to the thatched roof. The original house was surrounded by the common setting of a farmhouse with a pigsty, barns, stables and houses for farm labourers.
Capt. Hugh Hughes who added to the original, building Plas Gellidara in the Georgian style, was a farmer, Nonconformist preacher, founder and director of the Lleyn and Eifionydd Building Society and he built the Bethel Chapel in Penrhos.
The Caernarfon Quarter Sessions Calendar makes mention of the manor house as Plas Gellidara in the village of Gellidara, Penrhos. The residents of the manor house lived as respected gentry of Pwllheli, also participating in jury duty in the judicial system of the town. They were prosperous in Welsh farmland.
In the late 19th C, Plas Gellidara was the home of Capt. John Hughes (son of Captain Hugh Hughes) farmer, sea captain and Nonconformist preacher. His daughter married the farmer and poet Hugh Tudwal Davies [b. 1847]. Davies died at Plas Gellidara in August 1915.
Hugh Tudwal Davies wrote many englynion and cywyddau; he won prizes at eisteddfodau held at Pwllheli, 1875, and Caernarvon, 1880 and 1894.
March 1907, aged 84 Captain Hugh Hughes's wife died at Plas Gellidara. She sold hundreds of acres of land to the Bangor Estate of Lord Newborough.
1923, Mr. H Ariander Hughes, Manager of The Metropolitan Bank, Blaenau married Annie Roberts daughter of Rev D Roberts
Plas Gellidara continued in family ownership until 1970. Occasionally relatives from the US, New Zealand and the Midlands visit to reminisce about the family home.
