Homeowner View

Having grown up in the area and knowing the village well, Houghton and Wyton were at the top of our list of locations when we were looking to buy a house. We had a very particular image in mind of what we wanted- a house with character but which we could personalise to suit us. We had previously looked at a few houses of a similar style (late Victorian- early Edwardian utilitarian aesthetic) however none with such a nice location and frontage, set back from the road. The house, along with the attached no.2 were originally the workers cottages to Manor Farm House, off Loxley Green, hence the similar appearance to the chimneys, although they seem to have forgotten to scale it down for the cottages- possibly the main reason we fell in love with the house!

We were lucky in that the previous owners had recently fitted a new kitchen and we have redecorated throughout to create a more modern feel, trying to complement the history and character of the workers cottage with modern finishes. We have installed a French drain around the perimeter of the house, re-pointed and re-flaunched the chimney stack and fitted new fencing and planting in the gardens. The chimney and fencing work was carried out by people in the village.

Our favourite room is definitely the lounge with the log burner, which really warms up the house in the Winter, and the garden in the spring and summer evenings when the plants come alive is a real sun trap for BBQ's.

We were conscious when we bought the house that Houghton and Wyton have a really good community feel and we have really enjoyed this throughout our time here- with the community-owned shop, the annual Feast Week and numerous events throughout the year in the Village, and in the pubs! We are going to miss the bingo and quiz evenings!
The village has great access to local walks and cycle routes, the National Trust Mill and meadows and other pretty villages and towns plus Cambridge and Huntingdon are both easily reachable by car or bus- the recent addition of the bus stops from Houghton Hill have made our commute to Cambridge much easier given the current A14 works!

Everyone in the Village is very friendly, always saying hello. We particularly enjoy the nice mix of quiet village in the evenings after work and the more lively atmosphere of the activities over the weekends.

The two pubs, both with good food and beer, two tea rooms, art gallery, antique shop and the village shop as well as the garden centre along the road and the various sporting groups based at the pavilion mean that you don't have to leave the village! There is a pretty campsite by the Mill and we love inviting friends to hire out boats and punts on the river in the summer. Houghton and Wyton was even shortlisted and featured on the TV Village of the Year contest with Penelope Keith in 2018!

We are very reluctantly relocating for work, we doubt our next house will have all the character and space we have enjoyed so much here, in a village so welcoming.
