Tucked away on a quiet road just a stone’s throw from the thriving town centre of Wem is The Chestnuts, a large and beautifully presented period home that has been stylishly yet very sympathetically updated by the current owners. “I remember the very first time we came to look at the house, and I walked in and straight away turned to my husband and said, ‘this is my dream home’,” says the owner. “It’s such a beautiful house and has so much character. I loved it then and I love it now so it’s going to be such a wrench to leave.”

“I fell in love with the house the minute I saw it, but back when we bought it it was in need of a huge amount of work, which we’ve since done so it’s now absolutely stunning throughout. We added a huge glass panelled extension, which now forms our amazing kitchen, and it’s been designed in such a way that I can stand at my cooker and just gaze out at the fields beyond. The rest of the house is much as it was in terms of layout, we didn’t need to change it because the rooms are all beautifully proportioned and flow really well, but we’ve updated the décor to give the house as a whole a kind of French renaissance/shabby chic look. I’ve got chandeliers everywhere, we’ve used a colour palette that really enhances all of the lovely period features and the new extension with its modern white gloss kitchen creates such a lovely contrast. It’s everything and more that I hoped it would be.”

“The house is set nicely away from the road, so it’s very peaceful here, and to the front we have a large lawn, a pretty wildflower area and ample parking,” continues the owner. “To the rear we have another good-size lawn, trees dotted here and there, and a patio that runs around the perimeter of the house, so we can follow the sun all day long, and we’ve kept the fencing deliberately low so as not to obstruct the fabulous view of the surrounding farmland. It’s a very pretty garden and both the kitchen and the main dining room have doors that open straight out onto it, so there’s a lovely feeling of connection between inside and out.”

“The kitchen is the real hub of our home, but I would have to say that one my favourite rooms is the main bathroom,” says the owner. “It’s the size of a large double bedroom and features a huge double shower, ‘his and hers’ sinks and a bath that sits right in the middle of the room. It’s a part of the house that definitely has that wow factor.”

“The house sits on a very quiet road right on the edge of Wem, so we benefit from having peace and privacy and direct access to some gorgeous countryside, and yet at the same time we can stroll into town” says the owner. “We’re also within the catchment area for St Peter’s school, which is highly regarded, and just a short walk from the train station from where we can catch a fast service to both Manchester and Shrewsbury, among other places.”

“The house retains lots of really lovely original features,” says the owner. “The front door has the original stained glass, there are ceiling roses and beautiful coving, and there’s a really stunning stained glass panel that runs up alongside the staircase right up to the landing. When the sunlight is streaming in it looks just stunning.”

“Apart from the house itself, it will be the community within the town that I think I’ll miss most when we go,” says the owner. “We’ve made so many friends during the eight years we’ve been here, and it’s so nice to wander into town and bump into people you know. All in all, it’s been a fabulous place to live.”
